Applications are invited for the position of THz Measurement Facility Manager, a full-time senior research technician role.

This is an opportunity to join a growing THz electronics team. We have decades of experience in  microwave and mm-wave research, and over £5M of project funding, enabling us to extend our existing expertise upwards in frequency into the THz bands, where low spectrum usage provide new opportunities in sensing, communications, material characterisation and biomedicine.

The facility that you will develop and manage will be made available to users from universities and industry in the UK and beyond, to carry out measurements in this increasingly important field.  You will thus have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience while helping to develop and implement new THz measurement techniques, and to gain insight into the national and international research scene.

You will work closely with established research teams at Birmingham, including the Microwave Integrated Systems Lab MISL , the Emerging Device Technology group EDT , and research groups in Physics, Materials Science and biosciences. Your role will include working with potential users to establish how the THz measurement facility can be used in their research.

Your main duties will include:

  • Commission and maintain a state-of-the-art THz VNA system in accordance with the aims and objectives of our EPSRC funded strategic equipment project.
  • Develop and validate THz VNA test configurations and methods for antennas, propagation media, waveguide circuits and systems.
  • Document test and measurement processes to ensure safe and sustainable operation, and accurate, reliable results.
  • Work with all users as required to ensure that they are appropriately trained and guided in the use of the equipment.
  • Contribute to relevant committees involved in operation and marketing of the test facility.

Person Specification:

The post is available for both UK/EU and international candidates subject to work permit approval . The qualifications, experience and capabilities required are as follows:

  • A first degree or equivalent in electronic engineering or physical science.
  • Experience in the use of microwave, mm-wave or low THz test equipment, including Vector Network Analysers.
  • Good understanding of electronic and electromagnetic experimental work.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
