Natural Product Chemist

Rothamsted Research

Overview Of Role

A postdoctoral natural products chemist is required join the Molecular Discovery Group, an integrated research team at Rothamsted Research who are developing research in willow as a feedstock for the production of high value products for industrial biotechnology, renewable chemical and pharma industries. Using spectroscopic techniques, the post-holder will isolate and chemically characterise natural products from willow biomass from genetically diverse willow species and breeding lines.

This project forms part of the larger Institute Strategic Programme “Tailoring Plant Metabolism” at Rothamsted which aims to harness plant metabolism to generate high value compounds from plants. The post-holder will be expected to work alongside other researchers in this ISP and colleagues collecting high-throughput analytical data from the Rothamsted NMR-MS Metabolomics Platform.

The post holder must be proficient in bench natural product chemistry, compound isolation by HPLC and have the relevant skills to identify and structurally characterise organic compounds using advanced spectroscopies. Skills in larger scale extraction and purification of organic molecules from plants is also desirable as is the ability to carry out basic chemical synthesis for the generation of  substrates and analogues for biosynthetic studies. Working with geneticists and chemists proficient in plant metabolomics they will become skilled in the chemistry of woody biomass, and play a leading role in the development of  bio-products and the discovery and characterisation of novel biosynthetic pathways.

The position is a full time 3 year fixed-term contract in the first instance with a starting salary of £ 29842-32315 per annum.

Interviews will be held: 06/09/2017
