Postdoctoral Research Assistant - The Psychic Life of the Poor: A City Unseen in Mumbai, London, and New York

Following the award of a research grant from the AHRC, the Faculty of English Language and Literature invites applications for the post of Research Assistant to contribute to the project ‘The Psychic Life of the Poor: A City Unseen in Mumbai, London and New York’. This examines the institution of psychoanalysis in its inadequate engagements with urban poverty, race, and migrancy, as seen in the specific context of six global cities Mumbai, London, and New York primarily, with references in the Mumbai chapter to Kolkata, Bangalore, and Delhi .

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out research on behalf of the PI, Professor Ankhi Mukherjee, in the archives of the Wellcome Library and the London Clinic of Psychoanalysis, and for carrying out independent research which will lead to a publication in this area. They will also be required to assist in the organisation and leadership of two graduate workshops, and in arranging a major international conference to be held in Oxford in June 2018.

Applicants should possess a doctorate in English literature or a related discipline which must have been awarded by the time the individual takes up the post , and should have expertise in interdisciplinary humanities scholarship involving the history of medicine and/or psychoanalysis; experience of working on printed sources and in researching these sources in archives as well as online; and a high level of organisational and administrative skills.

This full-time post is offered from 1 January 2018 or as soon as possible after this date , for a fixed-term of 6 months.
