Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Exoplanet Algorithms

FTE: Full time position, working 37 hours per week (1 FTE)

Duration of Contract: Fixed term contract for 1 year from September 2017

Qualifications required:

Qualifications must include an undergraduate honours degree at a minimum 2:2 (or equivalent in a relevant discipline). In addition, applicants must hold a PHD or equivalent in a relevant subject or equivalent experience. The successful candidate will have a suitable portfolio of existing innovative research relevant to the post.

Description of the research activity and area:

We are interested in the bulk reduction and analysis of all radial velocity data to ensure full use is made of the wavelength dependence of signals in order to reliably validation multi-modal densities derived from Bayesian MCMC analyses of radial velocity, astrometric and other suitable data. The researcher will be based in the University of Hertfordshire's Centre for Astrophysics Research.

The researcher will be expected to establish a high-impact research programme which enhances and complements our existing research portfolio in exoplanet research. This is a research intensive position that carries an optional teaching workload of at most 6 hours per week during term time, involving teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.

Skills and experience needed:

The researcher will have established him/herself as having advanced statistical and numerical skills, capable of establishing a programme of research activity within the scope of the project. They will have excellent oral and written communication skills in both spoken and written English and a track record of publications in high impact journals. They will be expected to build capacity in the area of exoplanet research and be involved in helping to bid for external funding, previous success being a desirable attribute. They should be able to establish good working relationships, and work closely with members of the Centre and the broader School of Physics Astronomy & Mathematics, at the University of Hertfordshire and with partner organisations as appropriate.
