Research Associate

University of Sheffield - School of Mathematics and Statistics

Fixed-term for 36 months

The School of Mathematics and Statistics has a strong research ethos and an international reputation in research, with research groups in Algebra and Algebraic Geometry, Differential Geometry, Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical Biology and Environment, Number Theory, Particle Astrophysics and Gravitation, Probability, Solar Physics, Statistics, and Topology.

The School is seeking to recruit a Research Associate. This post is funded by an EPSRC Grant `Deformations of Saito-Kurokawa type Galois representations’ held by Dr Tobias Berger and is fixed term for 3 years. The project will develop new tools in the deformation theory of residually reducible Galois representations and study p-adic properties of Saito-Kurokawa lifts in order to prove the paramodularity of abelian surfaces, one of the key open problems in the Langlands programme. Details of the project can be found at http://tberger.staff.shef.ac.uk/

Working alongside 5 academic staff in algebraic number theory specializing in the Langlands programme will provide you with a stimulating environment to develop a successful research career. Funds will be available for professional development, such as conference participations and research visits.

You should have a PhD in a relevant area of pure mathematics or equivalent experience . We are looking for someone with a strong background in algebraic number theory or arithmetic algebraic geometry, with expertise to include some of the following: Siegel modular forms, p-adic families of automorphic forms, p-adic L-functions, and Galois representations.
