Research Associate/Fellow in Electrical Power Systems for Future More-Electric, Turbo-Electric and Superconducting Aircraft

Salary: £26,052 to £38,183 per annum, (pro rata for part time) depending on skills and experience (minimum £29301 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Applications are invited for the above position to join the world reowned Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group at the University of Nottingham. The PEMC group has undergone a significant period of growth and now has over 110 members, with 18 academics (including 7 full professors) and approximately 95 PhD students and post-doctoral research fellows, including 7 senior research fellows.

This position is associated with a new and exciting €1.5m project which will analyse and assess future more-electric, turbo-electric and superconducting electrical power systems for Aircraft. The main focus of the role will be to develop novel architectural assessment tools for future aircraft platforms. This role will involve close collaboration with external partners such as Airbus, DLR, ONERA, Modelon, ABB, TU Delft, Mälardalen University and TU Berlin. In addition the role will support ongoing projects focused on dynamic modelling and assessment of more-electric aircraft electrical power systems.

This post will be based at the Aerospace Technology Centre, Innovation Park, Nottingham, NG7 2TU. However, when needed, travel across University sites and to industrial partners may be required.

Candidates must have a first class or high second class (2.i) first degree (or equivalent) in a related subject. A PhD or equivalent (or near completion) related to one or more of the following areas is also desirable:

  • Power Electronic Converters
  • Electrical Machine Drive Systems
  • Sizing/Architectural assessment of Electrical Systems
  • Optimisation of Electrical System
  • Electrical Energy Storage
  • Electrical Superconductivity

It is also expected that the candidate will demonstrate high level communication and organisational skills and an aptitude for liaison with industrial partners.

This is a full time, fixed-term post available for commencement between August and October 2017 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of two years. Part-time or Job Sahre application are also encouraged at 0.5FT, 0.6FT or 0.8FT. Please specify in your application.
