PhD Studentship: Extension of Fanblade Lifetimes by Nanostructured Dry Film Lubricants

University of Nottingham - Engineering

During this 4 year fully funded PhD project between Rolls-Royce plc and The University of Nottingham you will gain direct experience of working in a leading global engineering company as well as working in a leading research led university. The resulting well-rounded combination of training and experience will be invaluable when seeking future employment.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in engineering, physics, or a related discipline, with a degree classification of 2.1 or above. To be eligible for a full award a student must have no restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship.

You will be working with Dr Katy Voisey and Prof. Phil Shipway on developing and testing novel coatings to prevent fretting failure of fan blade roots. As part of the Advanced Materials Research Group you will have access to the characterisation equipment, expertise, and training provided by UoN’s Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre. These facilities will be invaluable tools to study the role of the nanostructures within the dry film lubricants. Existing facilities within the Faculty of Engineering will be used for the majority of the experimental work, allowing coating deposition, testing, and characterisation to be done on site. The experimental programme can therefore be started with a minimum of delay. While our in-house facilities will be used to carry out the initial baseline fretting tests and optimisation trials, access to additional specialised test facilities that will be required for longer term lifetime testing will be available via Rolls-Royce plc. The project will include a 3 month placement at Rolls-Royce plc.

This project fully funds tuition fees as well as paying an enhanced stipend of £18.5 k per year throughout the 4 year project.

Informal queries should be directed to katy.voisey@nottingham.ac.uk.

Closing date: until filled.

Start date: from Oct 1st 2017.
