Permanent Research Officer – Meat Imaging Scientist

Location: Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15.

Grade/Salary: Research Officer. The current salary scale for this post is €32,729 to €63,700.

Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale per Government Circular E100/8/82.  Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc).

Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy.

Post Type: Permanent Appointment

A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function:                                                                                                                                  

Teagasc seeks to appoint a Research Officer to contribute to (a) the development, management and leadership of the Teagasc Meat Research programme, with a focus in the fields of imaging, spectroscopy and chemometrics, and (b) the ongoing industry-led Meat Technology Ireland Centre. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and participating in in-factory trials and take an innovative approach to developing prediction tools (including spectroscopic/imaging techniques) for carcass and meat quality traits. Securing external collaborative public research funding in this area will be an essential aspect of the role, as will maintaining contacts with industry and carrying out industry commissioned research and development projects. In addition, they will play a key role in ensuring the scientific excellence the meat research programme in the Food Quality and Sensory Science Department and will have responsibility for developing an internationally competitive meat research programme which also aligns with the needs of stakeholders.

Person Specification

Note: The ‘Essential’ qualifications, skills and knowledge outlined below are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the shortlisting process.

Essential Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a QQI Honours Level 8 degree in Science/Food Science or a related discipline.
  • PhD in a relevant discipline.

Note: While a PhD is an essential requirement for this post, equivalent research experience may be deemed acceptable solely at the discretion of the Director of Teagasc

Desirable Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral experience in imaging and spectroscopic techniques will be a distinct advantage.
