About The Role

The Technology Department (TD) has an opening to establish and lead a Portfolio Management Office (PMO) to support senior staff and implementation teams to deliver the portfolio of projects, programmes and business as usual activities of STFC Technology and The Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) at Daresbury Laboratory. The two departments deliver science and technology in Particle accelerator R&D, Nuclear Physics and Detector systems within the STFC programmes delivery.

Your duties will include:

  • Develop and implement the terms of reference for the Portfolio Management Office
  • Provide scrutiny, challenge and support to the Steering Committee by providing appropriate information in appropriate format to make informed decisions to sanction programmes and projects for inclusion in the portfolio
  • Support the Portfolio Implementation Committee in delivering the TD and ASTeC strategy
  • Ensure that the portfolio activities contribute to the value of the two departments and delivers benefits from all its projects, programmes and business as usual activities
  • Work with senior managers, business development, finance, project sponsors and programme(s) managers to define and implement the portfolio framework
  • Provide an ongoing health check of the portfolio by reassessing whether the programmes/projects continue to meet the overall strategic objectives
  • Ensure resource management is fit for purpose for current and future projects, programmes and business-as-usual activities has the right skills, at the right time they are needed and that staff resources are utilised as efficiently as possible.

About You

To be successful in this role you should have excellent leadership skills, knowledge and significant experience of project, programme and portfolio management and ideally some experience or understanding of science and technology delivery. You will have good communication, people management and stakeholder engagement skills along with some knowledge of working in a technically demanding field with similar complexity to STFC programmes.

You will be required to:

  • Demonstrate significant Project, Programme or Portfolio Management knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead internal and external staff and influence stakeholders
  • Demonstrate the competencies described in the list of Main Duties (which is found in the full job description)
  • Have the ability to use sound judgment in decision making under pressure where conflicting advice exists
  • Have a broad understanding of advanced technology solutions with equivalent technical complexity to STFC science delivery.
