The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences is seeking to appoint a 0.8 FTE Research Assistant for a fixed-term period of 12 months. The position is to support a research project entitled “Language, Place and Identity: exploring children’s linguistic and cognitive development in heritage and community languages” which is funded by the Carnegie Trust and led by Prof. Antonella Sorace.

As the successful candidate will be responsible for recruiting participants from schools, administering standard tests and questionnaires, and carrying out fieldwork in Edinburgh and the Western Isles, experience with undertaking research directly with children, their families, and practitioners, and negotiating fieldwork efficiently is essential.

This position also requires someone with a master’s degree in Linguistics, Sociology, Social Policy, Education or related disciplines, advanced knowledge of social science research methods and data analysis relevant to the project, and knowledge of research-related computer skills for experimental design and analysis (such as SPSS, E-Prime, Matlab). The post will be based in Bilingualism Matters, in the Department for Linguistics and English Language.

This is a part-time position, 28 hours per week, and is available from the 1st January 2018 for a fixed-term period of 12 months.
