Research Fellow, Quantum Gravity Sensing

We are developing cold atom based gravity sensing systems as part of the UK National Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology. A particular focus is the realisation of portable sensors to demonstrate their potential benefits in a range of application areas, such as the detection of sub-surface infrastructure or natural hazards. This requires the systems to operate at exceptional precision, while also being sufficiently compact and robust that they can be used in realistic environments.

Our work combines precision metrology with innovation, striving for fast-paced development in taking sensors from concept to operation outside the laboratory. This requires a diverse team with a range of skills across physics and engineering. We are seeking individuals who are driven by application focused research and a keen interest in the development of technology. Successful candidates would join an existing team and assist in further development of our existing and future portable gravity and gradiometry systems.

Person specification

The successful candidate would require:

  • A first degree in physics, engineering or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated technical and scientific experience in research undertaken through academia or industry, as evidenced by a PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a self-contained project, and to work effectively as part of a team of scientists or engineers.
  • Excellent communication skills, including documentation.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Expertise in cold atom systems OR significant expertise in technical areas of relevance, such as underpinning hardware or systems engineering.

And would desirably possess qualities such as:

  • Experience in cold atom interferometry, or similar techniques.
  • Experience in precision sensing.
  • Experience in technology translation and development.
