Postdoctoral Research Associate in Big Data Management

University of Oxford - Department of Biochemistry

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Software Engineer to aid in the design and implementation of technology to aid “on-the-fly” analysis and management of large amounts of molecular simulation data. We will focus initially on working with simulation data, but some of the issues encountered may be directly transferable to related areas of structural biology in the longer term. The work will involve data generate both on local facilities but also on the national supercomputer, ARCHER ( There will also be some scope for the development of new artificial intelligence/machine-learning tools to investigate patterns in the data.

Applicants should possess a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, physics or a related area and should have experience of manipulating large data sets on remote computational cluster resources, such as for example, the ARCHER national supercomputer resource. Although the project will focus on molecular dynamics simulation data in the first instance, it is envisaged that some of the issue encountered may be important for related areas in structural biology and imaging and the work may thus have broader applicability in the longer term. Thus, applicants should be able to design modular well-written code. You should also have extensive experience of scripting languages to drive data analysis, as well as demonstrate a willingness to tackle challenging projects with enthusiasm and commitment, as well as the ability to develop original approaches to problem solving.

This full-time fixed-term post is funded by John Fell Fund for up to 14 months in the first instance.

Further particulars, including details of how to apply, can be obtained from the document below.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 4 September 2017, with interviews for shortlisted candidates to be held on Monday 18 September 2017.
