The School of Biological & Chemical Sciences (SBCS) is one of the largest Schools within Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and is committed to excellence in research and teaching; and offers a lively and stimulating environment for both staff and students.

Applications are now sought for an experienced Research Technician in Biochemistry and Structural biology to work in the group of Dr. Vidya Chandran Darbari in the SBCS at QMUL.

The successful candidate will work on a Wellcome Trust funded project on “Virulence Strategies for Mycobacterial persistence: investigating the role of Mammalian Cell Entry proteins.”

The post holder will:

  • Provide specific technical support to the project on Mycobacterial Mammalian cell entry proteins using various molecular biology, biochemical and structural techniques.
  • Provide general research support in the areas of molecular biology and biochemistry in the research group of Dr Darbari.
  • Provide support to research staff and students in the general housekeeping of the research laboratories.
  • Support staff with particular non-scientific tasks, including ordering of materials, stocktaking of reagents, archiving samples, updating and maintaining documents relating to health and safety in Dr Darbari’s lab

The prospective technician should have specific knowledge and experience of general molecular biology and biochemistry skills including PCR, cloning of recombinant DNA constructs for over expression in E. coli, media preparation and basic culturing and protein purification and characterisation techniques. Knowledge and experience with structural biology techniques is desirable. The post holder would benefit from the ability to collaborate with other research groups in the School. The post holder will work closely with the PI, researchers and postgraduate students in the Darbari group, setting up and maintaining scientific experiments, interpreting results and outcomes and running experiments independently. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to present their research work, progress and outcomes.

The post is full time post for a period of 24 months. The starting salary will be £32,405 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and a defined benefit pension scheme.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
