University of Birmingham - School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Full Time, 5 year fixed term position

£39,324 - £73,018 (Full time Lecturer salary from £39,324 - £46,924 a year with potential progression (to £52,793 a year). (Full time Senior Lecturer/Reader salary from £48,327- £55,998 a year with potential progression (to £73,018 a year).

The University of Birmingham is continuing to make strategic investments across its research base in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES).

We are seeking to appoint at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level to a 5 year fixed term post in Geography. The successful candidate will join either the Human or Physical Geography Research Groups, but will be expected to develop a portfolio of activity which explicitly pursues the considerable interdisciplinary opportunities offered by a School with immense research reach and diversity.

Research at GEES challenges boundaries between environmental systems, and there are considerable opportunities for further innovative research collaborations at these environmental ‘interfaces’. Candidates approaching this role through the elemental within and beyond material geographies could think through matter such as earthliness, the subterranean, lithics, palaeontology and territoriality, and could consider the material and elemental geographies implicated in tectonics, palaeobiology, paleoclimatology, and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, in partnership with our Geosystems Research group and our award-winning Lapworth Museum of Geology. With regard to air, the aeolian, aerographies, atmospheres and atmospherics, they could draw upon our established strengths in atmospheric chemistry, meteorology and urban atmospheres, nanomaterials and the nature of environmental contamination. They could explore the nature and materiality of fluidity, water and its biophysical and hydrosocial properties, hydrodynamics and water infrastructures.

Researchers within both the Physical and Human Geography Research Groups collaborate with colleagues across campus, including with applied scientists within the Geosystems and Environmental Health Sciences Research Groups within the School, and this post offers an opportunity to design and develop interdisciplinary activities. Substantive recent investments in the School include the Birmingham Institute for Forest Research (BIFoR) and state-of-the-art mesocosm facilities, and we have a unique and extensive Map Collection.

The Physical Geography Research Group has core research strengths in Ecohydrology, Biogeochemistry, Biogeography, Fluvial Geomorphology, Wetland and Forest Hydrology, Hydro-Climatology and Sociohydrology. The Human Geography group has four research subthemes: Geopolitics, transition and the carceral; Adapting to energy and environmental uncertainties; Bodies, landscapes, materialities; and Urban and regional studies.

Evidence of a track record in publishing work of the highest academic quality and impact is essential, alongside track record of / potential for obtaining external research funding. Willingness to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries within the School and College is strongly encouraged. In addition to demonstrating (or showing potential for) internationally excellent research, applicants must have a commitment to delivering excellent teaching and learning, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and communicating the relevance and impact of their research to stakeholders.  The successful candidate will contribute to administrative tasks (appropriate to their appointment grade) to support delivery of research and teaching within the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Interviews will be held on 18/19 September 2017.

Informal inquiries can be made to Professor William Bloss (Head of School; w.j.bloss@bham.ac.uk) or Dr Dominique Moran (Deputy Head of School; d.moran@bham.ac.uk)
