We are looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic individual with a background in Criminology/Criminal Justice/Policing or closely related discipline, such as Forensic/Criminal Psychology or Sociology to join our academic team. The position offers an exciting opportunity to lead in the delivery and development of our online Criminology programmes offered in partnership with the University of Essex.

To succeed, you need to be self-motivated and hard-working with a passion for education. We particularly welcome candidates who are aspiring to forge a successful career within Higher Education and welcome applicants who can contribute and lead on our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Criminology. This post would suit an early career academic who wishes to gain expertise in online learning within a discipline related to either their research interests or professional background. Flexible working is considered and applicants currently studying for a PhD are welcome to apply.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Curriculum Development: the successful candidate will be required to oversee the development of our recently validated MSc in Criminology and Criminal Psychology programme. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing and developing our established BA in Criminology and Criminal Justice degree
  • Content writer - act as content writer for a range of modules across the department’s course offering
  • Check programme content quality, relevance, currency and appropriate target market(s).
  • Review and sign off all new/refreshed curriculum content and materials.
  • Make minor module amends, liaising with tutors, e.g. to assignment briefings, broken hyperlinks, additional reading, etc.

Management

  • Manage a department of freelance tutors to support the delivery and development of module programme materials

Internal/External Liaison

  • Liaise with External Examiner in relation to curriculum content and assignment briefs.
  • Liaise with the marketing team to assist in the development of recruitment channels and target markets.
  • Liaison with Instructional Designers/Learning Technologists to produce engaging, innovative online learning materials

Committee and Board Attendance/Membership

  • Attend Course Committee Meetings
  • Act as a member of the Academic Board
  • Attend Board of Examiner Meetings

About you:

To be successful in the role you’ll have the following:

Essential:

  • Possess a good honours degree in a relevant subject
  • Possess, or be working towards, a higher degree in a relevant subject
  • Have previous experience of Higher Education teaching
  • Be committed to opening educational opportunities and working with students from a variety of diverse backgrounds
  • Have the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Have enthusiasm for online teaching
  • Be prepared to work outside normal office hours
  • Have the ability to communicate and support students online and by phone Desirable:
  • Have previous experience of online teaching
  • Have practical, recent, experience of the Criminal Justice Sector
  • Hold a recognised teaching qualification or the commitment to work towards achieving a recognised qualification
  • Have the potential to contribute to scholarly activity and continued professional development including: research, moderation and consultancy
