Innovate UK Ceramic Filters RA job advert text

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop Surface Modified Ceramic Filters, as part of part of an InnovateUK project funded under the Energy Catalyst initiative and aiming to produce ceramic filter technology for cleansing of effluent gas streams and other hot gas flows in the energy industries.

The overall InnovateUK project is led by Smart Separations Ltd, a South London company who are developing novel, patented ceramic membrane filter technology.  In Guildford, the project is led by Dr David Watson and Prof Robert Slade.

The project will involve modification and testing of ceramic filters, use of electron microscopy and gas-sorption porosimetry, and related materials characterisation techniques. We seek a highly motivated and competent individual who has been awarded a lab-based PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline. Our laboratories are well equipped for porous solids and ceramics research, and for synthetic chemistry. The individual will be working closely alongside others working in related areas.

The appointee should have prior experience of some or all of: the chemistry of ceramics, modification of ceramic surfaces, nanostructured oxides and films, the use of gas flow test equipment (e.g. gas chromatography, residual gas analysis). Experience of synthetic chemistry would also be beneficial.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Robert Slade or Dr David Watson. Email: or

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1.
