Research Fellow in Tribology of Particulate Solids

This role is one of eight Research Fellow positions which have come about as a result of an EPSRC Programme Grant in Tribology being awarded. You will join a vibrant research institute (Institute of Functional Surfaces) and be part of a project investigating the science of friction.

In manufacturing involving particulate solids interparticulate friction and adhesion cause mechanical and cohesive jamming, which adversely affect productivity to the extent that it constitutes a major technology bottleneck. This collaborative project with the University of Sheffield aims to develop an understanding of the role of flow-aids in controlling friction and adhesion for the transport and processing of particulate solids by addressing the following tasks:

  • Experimental work using the state of the art facilities at Sheffield and Leeds for the tribological characterisation at nano- and micro-levels;
  • Numerical modelling of sliding contacts and simulation of shearing flows of particulate solids by Discrete Element Method.

Holding a PhD Degree (or close to completion) in a relevant field, you will have extensive knowledge and experience of DEM and implementation of custom codes/contact laws and a strong track record in material characterisation techniques, such as nanoindentation and friction measurement, particle characterisation. You will also have a positive approach to collaborative research and the drive and enthusiasm to make a significant contribution to this groundbreaking project.
