Policy Manager – Global Challenges Research Fund


About Us

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the main UK Government agency for funding research and training in Engineering and the Physical Sciences, investing approximately £850 million a year.

The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries through:

  • Challenge-led disciplinary and interdisciplinary research
  • Strengthening capacity for research and innovation within both the UK and developing countries
  • Providing an agile response to emergencies where there is an urgent research need.

About the Role

The GCRF is a new initiative for the Research Councils, with some very novel characteristics; it is also a new activity for the RCUK Executive Directorate.  You will support the design and implementation of the GCRF, providing a supporting role in the development of the strategy, policies, operations and organisation of GCRF. You will need a pro-active and imaginative approach as well as excellent planning, engagement and communication skills.

You need to understand the breadth and complexity of Research Council operations and work effectively with colleagues across the Councils.  You will need to build positive relationships across Councils and with external stakeholders.

Within this role you will:

  • Contribute to the commissioning of interdisciplinary research calls and peer review
  • Gather, understand and integrate internal and external information to support the GCRF strategy
  • Participate in project work including development of a peer review college
  • Provide briefings and respond to ad hoc queries from colleagues and external sources
  • Co-ordinate internal RCUK networks and work closely with other teams in the RCUK Executive Directorate
  • Work with stakeholders and represent RCUK at external networks and meetings.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have a comprehensive understanding of the role and work of the Research Councils and the broader UK and international landscape for research and innovation, including the Government’s policy objectives for investing in research. It is essential that you have strong communication skills with well-developed report writing skills.
