Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Acoustics and Audio Engineering

Southampton Solent University - School of Media Arts and Technology

Solent Acoustics (part of the School of Media Arts and Technology at Southampton Solent University) undertakes research and consultancy in Acoustics, as well as delivering acoustics and audio engineering modules to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the school.  We are currently seeking a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Acoustics and Audio Engineering to contribute to teaching, research and consultancy.  This will include teaching on the MSc Applied Acoustics, IoA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control, and on the undergraduate Media Technology and Acoustics programmes.    The post will be fixed term in the first instance.

Acoustics is a growing area for the school, which offers both undergraduate and postgraduate titles in Acoustics.   We are accredited by the Institute of Acoustics (IoA), and offer both professional short courses and the IoA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.   We also have an expanding consultancy business, covering all areas from laboratory testing to building acoustics and environmental noise.   We have excellent acoustics and audio engineering facilities, including a wide range of measurement equipment, a hemi-anechoic chamber, computing and electronics laboratories, a range of acoustic modelling and simulation software, recording studios, a spatial audio laboratory and a Dolby Atmos ® equipped cinema.

Applicants for this post should either be research active or have recent industrial experience in acoustics or audio engineering, particularly in building acoustics or environmental acoustics.  They will ideally have some experience with high level programming, MATLAB and/or Labview software.   An understanding of acoustic measurement systems, data acquisition and analysis is key. Competence in acoustic modelling packages such as CATT Acoustic, Odeon, EASE or CadnaA would be useful.

Experience of teaching or technical training would be an advantage, however, the confidence to communicate complex technical knowledge and ideas to students, together with the desire to inspire and motivate, is essential.

The post would suit early career researchers wishing to move into a permanent post or who wish to gain teaching experience, or alternatively industry professionals who would like to move into an academic environment.
