Contract Technician – Potato Breeding

Location: Teagasc, Crops Research Centre, Oak Park, Carlow.                 

Grade/Salary: Technician Grade 1, with a starting salary of €28,220 per annum. The current salary scale is €28,220 to €38,373. Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale per Government Circular E100/8/82.  Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc). Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy.           

Post Type: Temporary Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative    duration of which is 18 months, subject to contract, but may be extended subject to continuation of external funding.A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.      

Basic Function: We are seeking to recruit a motivated, skilled technician to work in Teagasc’s highly successful potato breeding programme based at the Crops Research Department, Oak Park, Carlow.  The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment and transition regularly between laboratory, glasshouse and field experimentation to support the research programme.

Person Specification

Note: The ‘Essential’ qualifications, skills and knowledge outlined below are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the shortlisting process.

Essential Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a Level 6 (Higher Certificate) in agriculture or plant science discipline or a related discipline.

Desirable Qualifications

  • A Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in plant science or relevant discipline would be desirable.
  • Laboratory or Agricultural Research experience would also be highly desirable.
