Centre Manager

UCL Institute of Neurology - Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging

The Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging (WTCN) at UCL, part of the UCL Institute of Neurology (IoN), seeks an experienced Centre Manager to be responsible for the delivery of operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and high quality administrative and customer services that underpin the Centre's world-leading neuroimaging research strategy.

This key strategic and operational leadership post within the WTCN is critical to developing and directing its research administration and support infrastructure to optimise efficiency and enhance its positioning as a state-of-the-art neuroimaging research centre. The appointee, working through the IoN Manager and Central Administration, will plan and manage the WTCN's operational processes, including business planning, implementation of robust financial sustainability models, operational quality and performance measurement tools, and scientific governance and oversight arrangements.

The post holder will input into and assist the WTCN Director, Executive Committee and Senior Management Team in implementing delivery of the Centre's strategic objectives, co-ordinating and delivering ad hoc projects on behalf of the EC and SMT.   Duties include: taking lead responsibility for the day-to-day financial and operational management of the Centre (its research facilities, staffing, equipment, health and safety, research governance and performance, grant applications, and compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and UCL policy and procedure); line-managing the Office Manager; overseeing the professional leadership of the Centre's Personal Assistants, working closely with the IoN HR team to ensure that staff are supported and managed in accordance with UCL policy and procedure; the financial management and oversight of the Centre' s numerous budgets (>£35 million) including research grants, discretionary and core strategic awards; oversight of the income recovery activities for funds generated through academic training and neuroimaging services; and support for investigators in the preparation of costings for new and ongoing research programmes, working closely with IoN and UCL Finance teams.

Applicants must have an honours degree (2:1), proven team leadership and line management experience (including the ability to tackle under-performance where necessary), experience of working at senior management level within large complex organisations and financial management of major clinical research programmes and services, knowledge of UK legislation surrounding research governance and data protection, and proven success in developing and implementing robust operational procedures to deliver service improvements. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and high-level numeracy skills, a highly organised and professional approach to work, and the ability to work independently, exercise initiative, prioritise under pressure, and delegate effectively, are essential.

The post is available immediately and is funded by the Wellcome Trust to November 2021 in the first instance.
