Research Associate

University of Cambridge - Department of Haematology

Applications are invited for the full-time position of Research Associate to join the group of Dr Simon Mendez-Ferrer based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Department of Haematology, University of Cambridge.

Dr Simon Mendez-Ferrer's research is focused on the regulation of the haematopoietic stem-cell niche in health and disease. Blood stem cells reside in specialised niches that allow them to self-renew, proliferate, differentiate and migrate according to the organism's requirements. The group studies multisystem regulatory mechanisms by which the haematopoietic stem cell niche fulfils these complex functions and how the deregulation of these mechanisms contributes to haematological disorders.

The group has demonstrated that the brain regulates a peripheral stem cell niche in the bone marrow (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18256599) partly through sympathetic innervation of nestin+ niche cells (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20703299http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23623496). Damage to this regulatory network contributes to the progression of certain blood disorders, such as myeloproliferative neoplasms (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25043017).

The role holder should demonstrate research laboratory experience in areas that match the interests of our group. Significant experience in haematopoietic stem cell and mesenchymal stem cell research is essential. Previous experience working in the interphase between the nervous and haematopoietic systems, and/or in the role of the bone marrow microenvironment in myeloproliferative disorders, will be positively valued.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant related subject.
