Lecturer (Research and Teaching)

University of York - Department of Computer Science

The Computer Science Department at the University of York is recruiting to ten new lectureships, over the next two years. Note that the role of Lecturer (Research & Teaching) is the equivalent to Assistant Professor. This is an opportunity for you as an early career academic to develop your career in one of the UK’s leading departments, and to make a major contribution to the discipline. This is an exciting opportunity at a time when computer systems are becoming even more critical to industry and society – in areas as diverse as games, health care, and autonomous systems. Applicants are welcome to join any of the Department’s research groups or centres (www.york.ac.uk/csjobs), although there is a particular interest in people with expertise in Human Computer Interaction and Real-Time Systems.

As a successful candidate you will be supported to develop a research portfolio and your skills as teachers, both through personal mentoring and through York’s Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP). You will be able to spend the greater part of your time on research, both developing your own interests and attracting research students and funding. Teaching will be built up progressively; initially this will involve support for student projects and tutorials, contributing to teaching, and then later taking overall responsibility for one or more taught modules.

We are seeking candidates who meet these key requirements:

  • PhD in Computer Science or cognate discipline;
  • A strong research focus, with the potential to develop your subject and to foster interdisciplinary working;
  • A proven ability to produce high quality publications;
  • Experience of developing research proposals;
  • The potential to teach core computer science in the undergraduate curriculum, as well as your own specialist material;
  • A collegial attitude, with a willingness to contribute to the overall success of the Department and University.

Appointments will be made on the University salary scale from £38,173 to £46,924 pa, on an open contract. Whilst the posts are full-time, we are committed to flexibility, in terms of working hours, e.g. to support those with family responsibilities, and we will consider part-time appointments.

Interviews will be held on the 26 & 27 October 2017. Informal enquiries can be made by email to cs-lectureships@york.ac.uk; candidates will be welcome to visit the Department for informal discussions.

The Department was ranked 7th overall in the 2014 REF.  Much of its work is interdisciplinary, and it is involved in four major centres with collaborations across the University and beyond. York is a Russell Group University, with strengths across Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities, offering ample opportunity for interdisciplinary work. It also has strong links with industry, including via spin-off companies, and the Department encourages entrepreneurial activity. The Department is housed in purpose-built accommodation, on the University’s East campus, on the edge of the city, and offers a pleasant environment for work and for leisure.
