PhD Studentship in Thermal Integrity Testing of Deep Foundations

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

A 4-year PhD studentship fully funded through a CASE award sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Arup is available in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Drs Mohammed Elshafie and Cedric Kechavarzi. The studentship has a start date of January 2018. Due to funding restrictions the studentship/project is only available to UK (full fees and maintenance) or EU citizens (fees only). We are unable to consider applications from any non-EU citizen for this studentship.

This exciting research will build on recent distributed fibre optic strain and temperature sensing research at Cambridge University to investigate, develop and prove an interpretation method to assess the structural integrity of deep foundations.

The proposed PhD will focus on heat transfer modelling in deep foundations and soil during concrete curing as well as field and laboratory studies to examine the influence of various parameters on concrete temperature in situ and associated mechanical performance. This will contribute to the development of guidance for the interpretation of thermal and strain testing data in the assessment of foundation integrity.

As the research offers significant benefits to industry, the successful applicant will work closely with engineering consultants Arup (http:///www.arup.com) and other industry partners.

The student will be hosted by the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (http://www-smartinfrastructure.eng.cam.ac.uk/) and join a vibrant and supportive team working in the area of smart infrastructure.

Applicants are expected to have:

To apply for this position, please email the following to Ms Magdalena Charytoniuk, mc991@cam.ac.uk by Sunday 24 September 2017, as late applications will not be considered
