Working in conjunction with IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research) and BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) in India, and the University of Sheffield, the project examines the effects of induced radiation damage, and gas bubble formation, across the interfaces between glass and ceramic phases within glass-ceramic materials. This is to better understand the long-term stability of such materials when used as waste forms for actinides. You will undertake research predominantly based at Liverpool, with meetings and experimental visits to Sheffield, and possible visits to BARC/IGCAR during the course of the project. The UK side of programme focuses on the implications radiation damage/gas bubble formation on the interface between the two phases, using system designed to test predictive models. The work in Liverpool will focus on the fabrication of the systems under examination, jointly with Sheffield, and analysis of both the undamaged and damaged materials, using a range of techniques, e.g. electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and others. You will also be responsible for co-ordinating sample transfers between the partners, and facilitating ion beam irradiation which will be undertaken jointly with the Indian partners. For appointment at Grade 6 you should have a degree in engineering or a physical science with an understanding of materials science, for appointment at Grade 7 you should have a PhD and relevant experience in radiation effects in materials.
