Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in Sociology

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the posts of Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in Sociology in the Department of Government, Sociology & Social Work, at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. 

The successful applicant must possess a Doctorate in Sociology, an established record of publications in the field of Sociology and significant teaching experience at the tertiary level.  They must also demonstrate leadership in guiding research at the postgraduate level and in the discipline generally.  An excellent knowledge of Sociology of the Caribbean and research experience in the region would be a distinct advantage. 

Areas of expertise could include one or more of the following: social inequality, migration, gender, race or ethnicity.

We are particularly interested in candidates with teaching and research interests in areas such as gender issues, migration, human trafficking or related topics. An extensive experience in successfully supervising postgraduate research students is required.  

Demonstrated interest in postcolonial theory, feminist theory, critical theory, or similar theories, will be a distinct asset. Evidence of scholarly aptitude and teaching experience on issues of inequality, migration, gender, race and ethnicity in the Caribbean will be an advantage.   

The appointee will teach courses covering theories and issues of social development, gender and race/ethnicity and class such as: Sociology of Development, Gender and Development, Caribbean Social Development, Tourism and Development. She/he will be required to supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate students. 

The successful applicant will be expected to assume duties by August 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
