Salary in the range: £36,800- £44,220 per annum*

Fixed-term appointment available for up to 2 years in the first instance

The Mechanics of Materials Division wishes to appoint a Research Associate to conduct research into Lithium Ion Batteries at Imperial College London. 

The Electrochemical Science & Engineering Group at Imperial is a multi-disciplinary research group spanning 3 departments including Mechanical Engineering and Earth Science & Engineering. It is one of the largest battery research groups in the UK and carries out world-leading research in both fundamental and applied aspects of electrochemistry.

The Research Associate will be involved in a project to develop advanced battery diagnostics for lithium ion batteries. The project will involve an element of modelling and implementation of those models into real time systems, and hence will also involve elements of control engineering. The project is part of a consortium involving three other Universities, and hence will involve significant collaboration, particularly with the team members developing the models.

Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent, or near completion of PhD) in an area pertinent to the research subject i.e. Engineering or Physical Sciences and a first degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Physical Sciences. In addition some background in lithium ion batteries is essential. 

The candidate must be able to understand how a lithium ion battery works. Experience of modelling is desired. Experience designing experiments, or working with experimentalists, to develop advanced diagnostic techniques for state-of-health monitoring is desired. They must be able to apply control theory and techniques, to combine the models with the diagnostic techniques to achieve real time monitoring in embedded systems (i.e. limited computing power found in typical battery management systems).
