Assistant Professor in Civil or Environmental Engineering (Grade 7 or 8)

Durham University - Engineering

The role:

Set within our high-flying Engineering department (currently ranked 5th in the UK and boasting students with a minimum grade average of A*AA), this fantastic role combines teaching with research, making for a diverse and engaging academic experience. Supporting the university’s key research areas including the Sustainable Infrastructure Challenge, you will join colleagues who have strengths in geotechnical engineering and computational mechanics, contributing your own research interests and ideas of how these can be applied within an engineering context. Pursuing interdisciplinary research opportunities with industry, academic and government partners, you will also continue our relationship with the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) and the Durham Energy Institute (DEI). You will also teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, support undergraduate research and design projects, and supervise PhD candidates, inspiring the next generation of Civil and Environmental Engineers.

You’ll need:

  • A good first degree and a PhD in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a closely related field.
  • To be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer, or be working towards achieving Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience of teaching seminars and lectures, with HEA fellowship (or be willing to become a fellow).
  • Well-developed and internationally acclaimed research plans, with the ability to secure funding.
  • The confidence to recruit and supervise PhD students, and to lead research groups.
  • Keen communication skills with the ability to secure partnerships for the benefit of students and the department as a whole.

Candidates who would like to apply for the position as a grade 7 post must have concluded or be in the process of concluding their PhD studies. While you won’t necessarily hold all of the above criteria, you are encouraged to apply for this role if you feel you have the potential to achieve these standards.
