Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering (Grade 7 or 8)

Durham University

The role:

Boasting an excellent reputation for engineering, this vibrant department is ranked 5th by the Complete University Guide 2018 – making this combined teaching and research role particularly desirable.  Providing an exceptional standard of education and supervising undergraduate research projects and PhD studies in Electrical Engineering, your enthusiasm for delivering innovative seminars, lectures and guidance will ensure our gifted students continue to flourish. Enjoying plenty of encouragement to pursue your own studies (including research leave) with ideas on how your outputs could be applied within an engineering capacity, you will also support the key research objectives of the department including our Future Energy Systems challenge. Sharing your knowledge in topics such as electric drive systems, control systems, magnetic devices and energy storage systems, you will also work collaboratively with other academics to produce interdisciplinary results.

You’ll need:

  • A good first degree with a PhD in Electrical Engineering.
  • To be a Chartered Engineer, or working towards this.
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following: electric drive systems, control systems, magnetic devices and energy storage systems.
  • Clear plans for research funding, plus an experimental research portfolio with the ability to contribute to one of our key areas such as Future Energy Systems, or those listed here https://www.dur.ac.uk/engineering/research/
  • The ability to lead research groups and mentor early career researchers, and the confidence to supervise PhD students.
  • Good teaching skills supported by fellowship of the HEA (or willing to attain this).
  • The confidence to build national and international research links with other universities, industry and government partners.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly as you will be expected to attract future PhD students.

Candidates who would like to apply for the position as a grade 7 post must have concluded or be in the process of concluding their PhD studies. While you won’t necessarily hold all of the above criteria, you are encouraged to apply for this role if you feel you have the potential to achieve these standards.

Closing date: 29 November 2017 midday
