We are looking for an enthusiastic individual, with a life-science background, to help support and further develop the conferences and courses programme at the Wellcome Genome Campus. Working as part of the Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences team, you will initiate and develop new ideas for conferences across a range of scientific areas. To take on this challenge, you will have a broad interest in science, be keen to develop new events that help shape future research, you will be pro-active and have skills to turn a good idea into a reality.

 You will be the scientific lead on a portfolio of events (courses, conferences and retreats), working alongside an experienced team of event organisers. In this varied role, you will also be responsible for advertising, marketing and obtaining sponsorship for the events in your portfolio. This will involve chairing conference planning and review meetings, working closely with scientific programme committees and event organisers, and liaising with conference centre staff and other stakeholders.

 You will be able to work well within a small team and demonstrate excellent negotiation and communication skills. You will need to be able to work flexibly, meet deadlines and work on several projects which are at different stages of development simultaneously. 

Essential Skills

  • PhD in biomedical sciences or equivalent experience
  • Experience and knowledge of the academic sector and the research environment
  • Experienced in working effectively with senior scientists and other stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication, networking and negotiation skills 
  • Multi-tasking skills 
  • Self-motivated and responsible. 
  • Ability to cope with pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Must be able to work as part of a team within a defined organisational structure.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours 

Ideal Skills

  • Post-doctoral research experience in an area relevant to the ACSC programme
  • Experience in scientific administration or working with academic researchers or commercial organisations developing/organising workshops, conferences, or other events

Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences is the only UK-based programme providing open postgraduate courses and conferences focused on biomedicine. We fund, develop and deliver training and conferences that span basic research, cutting-edge biomedicine, and the application of genomics in healthcare. Our programme spans basic research and translational biology, with an emphasis on large-scale approaches and innovative technologies in genetics, genomics and infectious diseases.

Around 50 events are organised each year attracting up to 3,500 scientists and clinicians to the campus. We have a global reach with delegates from over 100 countries. We also run courses regularly outside the UK, in Latin America, Africa and Asia. These overseas courses provide training tailored to regional biomedical communities in low- and middle-income countries.

The Programme is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science.
