Health and Safety Adviser (Biosafety)

This post is for a period of 18 months in the first instance

Campus Health and Safety act as a conduit across the Campus for the continuous improvement of health and safety standards and related disciplines through advising, coaching and influencing management and their teams. The primary objective of the Health and Safety adviser is to support the scientific faculty and operations managers' and their teams, which will include providing competent, pragmatic advice in the preparation of procedures and risk assessments, particularly in the area of biosafety, delivering appropriate training and ensuring processes are continually improved through a proactive monitoring programme.

Given the diverse nature of Campus activities this role will have responsibility for a wide range of complex and routine health and safety casework, including the investigation of injury and non-injury events and occupational health concerns. Other relevant expertise therefore is highly desirable.

Essential Skills

  • Experience of working in a laboratory-based role with some health and safety responsibilities e.g. Safety Representative, Laboratory Manager, etc.
  • Educated to QAA Level 4/5 or equivalent in a biological science subject
  • Competent user of Information Technology in an office environment
  • Experience and proficiency to engage an audience when delivering training sessions
  • Proven proficiency to plan and prioritise work with the minimum of supervision working independently, or as part of a team
  • Experience of undertaking multiple tasks whilst prioritising according to need
  • Experience of challenging behaviours and culture whilst establishing a cooperative and collaborative working environment
  • Ability to work with and influence people at all levels, adapting advice according to target audience

Ideal Skills

  • Educated to QAA level 6 or equivalent in an appropriate biological science
  • Practical laboratory experience in molecular biology strategies and techniques gained in an academic or industrial setting
  • Vocational qualification in biosafety such as the ISTR Biosafety Practioner level 1 or equivalent
  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent qualification
  • Technician Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health or an equivalent professional organisation with an active CPD programme
  • Operational health and safety expertise in more than one area or speciality
  • Capability to development new training material that's fit for purpose
  • Demonstrable experience in a tactical health and safety role
