Research Associate

Imperial College London - Department of Chemical Engineering

Fixed Term for 12 months

Campus: South Kensington

Applications are invited by highly talented researchers for a position to pursue research into the modelling, design, fabrication and testing of a novel hybrid PV and solar-thermal (PVT) collector technology, as part of a wider solar-energy-based heat, power and cooling (tri-generation) system. This project is an exciting piece of research that focuses on the development of advanced technological solutions and modelling tools which can have a transformative role in the energy sector in the decades to come. The successful applicant will be provided with the unique opportunity to work alongside highly acclaimed academic investigators and pioneering industrial partners in a world-leading research environment.

The specific objectives are to: 1) demonstrate the thermal and electrical performance of a PVT collector that features novel solar cells, with the help of SME partner Naked Energy; 2) develop a system model that reproduces the behaviour of the collector and that can be used for system design; 3) assess potential applications for this technology for high efficiency, combined solar heat and power in the industrial and commercial sectors. System trials will take place to consider the thermal output utilisation, notably with the absorption refrigeration technology developed by SME partner Solar Polar.

The applicants should have a Masters or PhD (or equivalent, or be near to completion) in an area related to thermal management, thermo-fluid systems/processes, power-conversion and thermal cooling. The applicants are also expected to have a strong foundation in energy, thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics and an excellent knowledge of similar and related energy technologies.

The start date will preferably be before November 2017.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040.
