Technology Support Officer AIM Facility

The role is to fulfil a requirement for technical support for the operation, training, supervision and maintenance of equipment within the Advanced Imaging of Materials Facility within the Materials Research Centre of the College of Engineering. The AIM Facility has X-Ray, optical and electron microanalysis laboratories and ancillary techniques. (

The successful candidates will be offered an opportunity to support new and existing research schemes within the college, liaising with undergraduate & post graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, academic staff and external industrial companies. This position comes at an exciting time for the college and the centre, with the acquisition of a number of new world class instruments. The successful candidate will be integral to the Centre and will be expected to assist in its delivery. The personal development of the successful candidate is crucial to the role. As such, in addition to the relevant training opportunities within the university, the range of highly specialist techniques gives opportunity to expand and develop the individual’s knowledge and experience in a number of fields.

Main Duties

Once fully inducted, the post holder will be responsible for the training and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and relevant research and academic staff in the use of the facilities in AIM.

Essential Criteria

  • Educated to postgraduate degree standard in relevant engineering or physical sciences discipline or equivalent experience on electron and optical microscopy equipment
  • At least 2 years previous experience in operation of at least one of the relevant X-ray or Electron techniques used in the AIM Facility
  • Previous experience of training and assessment of users on the use of Advanced Imaging Equipment.
  • Previous experience of scientific experimentation involving the independent operation of complex microscopy equipment.
