Vecotech Limited is an exciting new spin out company from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (the School) established to capitalise on the expertise of its scientists in novel methods for the surveillance and control of a wide range of medically important insects. There is a potential pipeline of proprietary technologies and Vecotech is initially focusing on developing novel products that both address market needs and have strong social impact.

The business is now seeking a highly organised and enthusiastic individual, with an entomology research background, to join Vecotech in the position of Research Assistant. The post-holder will assist in the preparation and implementation of studies to develop personal protection insect repellent technologies and a novel lure for the surveillance of bed bugs. They will report directly and liaise with the Research Scientist to ensure timely progression of product development.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with excellent attention to detail, outstanding teamwork, organisational and scientific skills, and someone with an interest in vector control and keen to work at the interface between science and business.  The post holder should also have a good working knowledge of computer software packages such as Microsoft Office, and should be willing to learn new skills. Previous lab-based research experience is essential.

The post holder is expected to start immediately. The salary will be £26,000 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting).  Annual leave entitlement is 25 working days per year + 4 fixed closure days. The post will require flexible working across two sites based in Bloomsbury (Keppel St labs and Gordon Sq offices). 

Job Specification:


  • Work closely with the Research Scientist and assist with the preparation and implementation of experiments to develop and test products designed for insect control or personal protection. This will involve handling mosquitoes and bed bugs.
  • Perform arm in cage experiments involving a range of biting insects. This will involve being bitten by insects
  • Maintain a colony of mosquitoes and other insects as required
  • General lab duties, including preparation of chemicals/materials for testing
  • Air entrainment of chemical products
  • Ensure all lab areas are tidy and maintained to good laboratory practice
  • Handle confidential information
  • Attend regular R&D meetings with senior Vecotech staff
  • Assist with other administrative and research activities where required, including ordering lab and office equipment and managing payment of invoices

Person specification:


  • Science degree or equivalent work experience
  • Experience of working in a research lab environment and carrying out lab work
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork and organisation skills
  • Excellent IT skills, including use of Microsoft desktop applications, including Word and Excel
  • Proven ability to juggle a high and varied workload to a high degree of accuracy


  • MSc in Medical Entomology (or related discipline)
  • Experience of rearing insects
  • Experience of dealing with companies and private sector organisations.
