An exciting opportunity has arisen in the laboratory of Professor Bettina Platt who seeks to appoint a highly motivated post-doctoral research fellow with an interest in experimental dementia research.  

The specific post is funded for 4 years by Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) and will investigate the link between dementia and diabetes in preclinical models, in collaboration with Professor Gernot Riedel and Professor Mirela Delibegovic.

You will join a vibrant research group that explores neurodegeneration from different angles in vitro/ex vivo and in vivo. We are an international and multidisciplinary team of researchers at different levels in their career (senior and junior post-docs, PhD students). 

PhD (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for this post and we specifically look for experience in either Alzheimer’s disease or diabetes research, and/or some background in neurodegeneration.experience with in vivo techniques would be an advantage.

The salary will be paidon the Grade 6 salary (£32,548 per annum). Consideration will be given for an appointment at Research Assistant, Grade 5 level in the first instance (£27,285 - £30,688 per annum) for individuals in the final stages of completing their PhD. The appointment is subject to the usual terms and conditions of employment of the University.

This ARUK funded post will study the link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, the project will investigate the degenerative events triggered by hBACE1 in the hippocampus and hypothalamus, and establish whether there is a link between APP cleavage, neurodegeneration and metabolic dysregulation. Research will employ innovative techniques to characterise proteinopathies and explore phenotypes and pathologies of our novel PLB4 mouse model, which presents with dementia and diabetes relevant symptomatology. Additionally, regional viral transfection and drug discovery components are part of the project. Biochemical/histological analyses and behavioural testing skills will be required.
