Research Assistant/Associate Synthesis of Nanoparticles and Materials in Flow Reactors

University of Cambridge - Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

Grade 5 £25,298 - £30,175 Grade 7 £29,301 - £38,183

A position is open for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate as part of an EPSRC Research Project at the University of Cambridge, in the group of Dr Laura Torrente.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in chemical reaction engineering, process engineering and synthesis and characterisation of nanoparticles and materials, including a PhD in a relevant area. Experience with working with microfluidic systems, flow systems, microfabrication and fluid dynamics will be advantageous.

The aim of the project is to develop a continuous manufacturing technology of metal nanoparticles and nanostructured materials with controllable sizes and morphologies for use mainly in catalysis. The project will develop novel reactor designs with integrated functionalities guided by computer fluid dynamic simulations. The research will involve the study of experimental and theoretical aspects related to the mechanism of nanoparticle synthesis including mass transfer, mixing and velocity profiles. Full characterisation of the resulting materials will feedback the optimisation of the design.

The ability to work both as part of a team, and independently, coupled with excellent communication, organisational and problem solving skills are required. The duties / responsibilities of this post include developing and driving research objectives, writing up work for presentation and publication, collaborating with industrial partners, assisting in the supervision of student research projects, and delivering seminars and occasional talks as outlined on the Further Information document.

Candidates should have a good first degree (2.1 or equivalent) and have or be working towards a PhD in relevant area (such as Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemistry, etc.)
