Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Single Molecule Transistors and Nanodevices

Two postdoctoral research appointments in the fabrication and investigation of molecular quantum devices are available, each for a fixed-term of 36 months. The posts will be under the supervision of Professor Andrew Briggs and his colleagues. The persons appointed will fabricate and test single-molecule electronic devices connected across graphene nanogaps, including characterisation of charge transport behaviour at a range of temperatures (20 mK, 4 K, 77 K and 298 K).

A breakthrough in the development of single-molecule transistors has come with the development of nanogaps in graphene for electrodes, leading to unprecedented stability and reproducibility of devices. There is now an urgent need to understand the electronic behaviour of these devices in greater detail, particularly: (i) in the presence of a temperature gradient; (ii) in devices fabricated from larger molecules (5–20 nm) or nanoribbons. These full-time posts offer an excellent opportunity to make progress towards emerging quantum technologies through fundamental scientific discovery.

By the start date applicants must have completed a doctorate in a relevant physical science and have an outstanding track record of research and publications, commensurate with stage in career.  Applicants will have research experience in investigating charge transport through nanodevices. Experience of low temperature charge-transport experiments is desirable. Willingness and ability to engage with others in collaborative research is essential for this post. Availability to start on or before 1 January 2018 would be desirable.
