Research Fellow in Security and Privacy

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey seeks to recruit an outstanding post-doctoral researcher in the fields of Security and Privacy for a full-time position by December 2017. The post is part of the funded EPSRC project “TAPESTRY: Trust, Authentication and Privacy over a DeCentralised Social Registry”. TAPESTRY will investigate, develop and demonstrate new cryptographic protocols to enable people, businesses and services to connect safely online.

Successful applicant will be working under supervision of Dr Mark Manulis and will benefit from the environment provided by the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security, an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research recognized by the British Government. Centre’s research focuses on the design and analysis of security protocols, data privacy, access control, privacy preserving security, trustworthy systems, distributed ledger technologies, digital forensics and human-centred computing.

TAPESTRY will develop a de-centralised registry that stores trails of users' digital activity and cryptographic protocols enabling users to share portions of their digital activity at specific granularities and to prove they are trustworthy without giving away excessive information that violates their privacy. The interdisciplinary project involves three UK universities (Surrey, Dundee, Northumbria) and is supported by companies (incl. Microsoft Research). Surrey is the leading project partner and is responsible for researching, designing and developing the underlying technology.

Successful applicants will have core skills in the design, analysis and implementation of privacy-oriented cryptographic protocols (e.g. zero-knowledge protocols) and experience in the implementation of distributed/web-based applications (incl. browser plugins). They are expected to hold a PhD, be able to drive their own research direction within the scope of the project and engage with project partners.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£30,688) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£31,604).
