Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in laser spectroscopy of sunscreens to work with Dr Caroline Dessent and Dr Martin Cockett in the Department of Chemistry, University of York. 

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful academic departments at York.   • Role

This project is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and the main duties of the role are to conduct research into application of laser spectroscopy to investigate the fundamental photochemistry and photophysics of organic sunscreen molecules, as well as their aggregates with solvents and inorganic particles to understand how complexation affects the intrinsic sunscreen properties. You will join the teams led by Dr Dessent and Dr Cockett, and in addition to research responsibilities, will be expected to assist with the supervision of more junior group members.

  • Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will require a PhD in physical chemistry including knowledge and experience of a range of research techniques and methodologies (e.g. pulsed lasers, photochemistry, mass spectrometry, instrument development). You should have substantial experience in at least one area of laser spectroscopy. You will have an understanding of the operation of a research laboratory and an awareness of health and safety issues. You will be highly self-motivated, with good time management, communication and IT skills. You will have the ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination.

This position is for a period of 24 months and is available from 1st November 2017.

Salary will be: £31,604 - £32,548 Per year
