Department of Sociology and Social Policy

The Department of Sociology and Social Policy ( combines teaching and research in sociology and social policy.  It contributes with the Department of Economics, Department of Applied Psychology and the Department of Political Science to the Social Sciences Programmes in the University.  Applicants are recommended to visit the departmental web site and programme web site ( for more information. 

Areas of teaching specialization are open but applicants should be able to contribute to existing courses offered by the department and to offer new Sociology courses as appropriate.  The courses currently offered by the department are available on its website. 

General Requirements
Applicants should have a PhD degree in Sociology or a related discipline with relevant teaching experience, excellent publication and competitive grants records. 

Applicants should provide information on their research interests and research plans, teaching portfolio, and evidence of quality teaching.  Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential.  The appointee is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence, engage actively in research and contribute to the scholarly activities and service in the Department and the University. 

The conditions of appointment will be competitive.  The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The appointment will be at Assistant / Research Assistant Professor rank. Approval for an appointment at Associate / Research Associate Professor level may be sought in the case of a candidate with an exceptional academic record.  Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, housing benefits and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee. 

Appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointments with possibility of consideration for substantiation.
