PhD Studentship: Eye Gaze for Interaction in Virtual Reality Games

Lancaster University - School of Computing and Communications

We invite you to apply for a fully funded 3 year PhD studentship investigating eye movement for interaction in virtual reality games. You will be collaborating with researchers from Lancaster University looking at the cutting edge of eye tracking, human-computer interaction (HCI) and VR games. The position is supported by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Eye gaze has compelling properties for interaction. Where we look is linked to attention and to our goals, and we naturally use our eyes to point at objects, and to communicate non-verbally. The aim of this project is to study eye movement for interaction in immersive VR, develop multimodal techniques that augment/replace existing VR controls, and investigate how gaze can support social interaction and multi-user experiences in VR.

Applicants must have an excellent first degree in Computer Science and a strong interest in VR, interaction and games. You must have very good programming skills, a good understanding of HCI, and should have prior experience with VR and/or game development. Experience with eye tracking and gaze interaction is an advantage but not required.

The project is adventurous and requires a hands-on approach, creativity, and strong motivation to help push the boundaries of interaction in VR. You will join a vibrant and highly supportive research group at Lancaster and we expect you to bring excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration in the team, with partners and in the field internationally.

The position will be open until filled. You are welcome to contact Prof. Gellersen initially to informally discuss your interest. Please submit applications complete with supporting documentation (CV, cover letter, academic transcripts, and research statement) and reference to “Eye Gaze for Interaction in VR Games” online at: http://www.postgraduate.lancs.ac.uk/.
