Research Fellow (Ex Vivo Epicardium Model)

University of Surrey - School of Biosciences & Medicine

We are excited to advertise a postdoctoral position that will be the key research scientist in an exciting multidisciplinary project, which is a collaboration between the University of Surrey (UK), and King’s College London.

In this project, we aim to establish a novel ex vivo model of the epicardium, based on cardiac slices obtained from porcine hearts. The epicardium has recently emerged as a source of cells participating to cardiac repair and scar formation after myocardial infarction. This model will help elucidate the mechanisms of action of the epicardial cells and the potential therapeutic approaches available to improve its function.

We are looking for a positive and energetic individual with experience in cell culture (cardiac cells) and histology, some knowledge of cardiac physiology would also constitute an advantage. Competency in data analysis and scientific writing (as evidenced by authorship of peer-reviewed publications) is fundamental. We are looking for an individual able to work and think independently as well as interact positively with colleagues and collaborators. Your PhD could be in Biological Sciences, Cardiovascular Sciences or related subjects. Interest in public engagement and website design would be a bonus. Applications from qualified residents of any country would be considered on their merits and according to current legislation.

In addition to your salary, you will receive pension contributions via the Universities Superannuation Scheme, a generous annual leave entitlement, relocation assistance where appropriate, an attractive research environment, and access to a variety of staff development opportunities as well as discounted membership in the Surrey Sports Park.

The University of Surrey is located on a beautiful, leafy campus in Guildford, just 30 miles from London and benefitting from excellent rail and road connections.

This is a fixed-term contract of up to 18 months duration.
