Professor in Chemistry

King's College London

Chemistry at King’s College, London is entering a new era. As part of a significant expansion of the Department of Chemistry, the University is seeking to appoint a visionary Professor with a world leading track record of innovative chemistry that transcends the traditional discipline boundaries. The post provides a unique and exciting opportunity to shape the future of Chemistry at one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in the UK. King’s vision is to create a contemporary department, which enshrines the rigour of the subject but is renowned for ground-breaking interdisciplinary science. This ambition is being realised by considerable investment at King’s in Science and Technology, including further teaching, lectureship and reader appointments within, or jointly with, the Department of Chemistry. A key part of the King’s Chemistry ethos is equality, with a new dynamic and fulfilling research culture for all, and an emphasis on tackling the under-representation of women in science.

A priority for the department is in realising the transformative power of Chemistry at the interface with Biology and Medicine. Chemical Biology is a key strategic area in which we have notable expertise. We particularly encourage applications where core Chemistry, particularly based upon synthetic or inorganic approaches, is being used to pioneer new directions in Chemical Biology, Biomaterials, Synthetic Biology, Nanomedicine and Nanoscience, complementing existing strengths within the department and at King’s. This list is not exhaustive and we welcome applications across Chemistry that are imaginative and interdisciplinary.

You will provide academic leadership of Chemistry across King’s and in the strategic development of our future. The prime position of King’s in central London is a key asset, providing benefits from our partners across the capital. Notably, King’s is a primary partner with the landmark Francis Crick Institute, which offers a unique opportunity to work with world leaders in helping realise our interdisciplinary vision of biomedical research through a programme of collaboration, satellite, and secondment.

Candidates will have an outstanding research profile with an excellent publication record, international esteem, and evidence of substantial research funding. The successful candidate will play key roles initiating and leading major collaborative endeavours within King’s, across London, and internationally. You will mentor and inspire junior colleagues, and contribute to the design and delivery of the department’s innovative teaching programme.

The selection process will include a presentation and a panel interview.

Interviews are scheduled to be held the week commencing: Monday 8th January 2018

The salary will be paid at Professorial Grade, £64,979 – £90,000 per annum, plus £2,923 per annum London Allowance.

This post will be based on a full time, indefinite contract.
