Research Associate in Power Electronics

University of Sheffield - Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Job Reference Number: UOS017215

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering invites applications to undertake research on high performance and high reliability SiC-based power electronics converters for aerospace applications. The post holder will work within the EU sponsored “Integrated, Intelligent Modular Power Electronic Converter (I2MPECT)” project joining a team of 8 leading European academic and industrial partners to investigate, design and test solutions for integrated condition monitoring, lifetime estimation and fault detection for SiC power devices using facilities available within the Electrical Machines and Drives group at the University of Sheffield and project partners.

The project requires in-depth knowledge of thermal modelling of power electronics devices, modules and converters, and extensive use of modelling and simulation tools such as Ansys and Matlab/Simulink together with real-time data acquisition and prototyping platforms. The project will lead to the development of novel thermal monitoring concepts for SiC devices based power modules, using facilities available within the EMD group and project partners.

The post provides an ideal opportunity to undertake high quality research in collaboration with leading academic and industrial researchers in the field. The post holder will be expected to participate in technical meetings, and be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences and to publish research findings in learned society journals.

Applicants should possess a PhD (or working towards) in thermal modelling of power electronics or in a closely related field. In addition, a strong scientific background in device modelling and condition monitoring is highly desirable.

This post is offered on a part-time basis of 20hrs per week for a fixed-term with an end date of 30 April 2018.
