The Centre for Astrophysics Research is seeking a manager for its IT facilities. This includes the daily oversight of staff and research student desktop provision and the high-performance computing cluster. Some working time may be available for individual research where that contributes to the CAR research strategy. 

Main duties & responsibilities

The post holder will support staff and research student desktops and laptops running Linux, Mac OS and Windows. They will be the main system administrator for the Linux file servers, web servers and backup servers. They will have some responsibility for administration of the UH high-performance computing cluster, and will specify and purchase new equipment as needed. Occasional out-of-hours working may be required.

Skills and experience needed

Linux system management experience is essential. Experience of Windows system administration, of high-performance computing in a Linux environment and/or of astronomical software and scripting is desirable. The person appointed will be conscientious, thorough, self-motivated and willing to work proactively in a team toward shared goals; will be able to work to deadlines; will have mature interpersonal skills, and will be willing to go the extra mile to support system users.

Qualifications required

A Bachelors/Masters degree in a numerate discipline, preferably within the physical sciences is essential. Ideally a PhD in astronomy/astrophysics or a closely related discipline will be held.
