Analytical Chemistry (Advanced instrumental analysis of substrates derived from the processing of bio-based raw materials) 

Job Description
The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/) has an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the development of advanced materials from natural resources involving the full value chain. The department capitalizes on its interdisciplinary access which involves the disciplines chemistry, physics, materials science, textile design, biotechnology and related areas and which addresses the design and development of high-performance fibre materials, nanomaterials and hybrids as well as functional interfaces derived therefrom. 

Over the last years, analytical platforms including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC, HPAEC, GPC), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and high-resolution spectrometric techniques, mainly mass spectrometry (MS), have been installed. We are looking to expand this range of activity and to complement and improve our current research capabilities in analytical chemistry. 

We are looking for an experienced analytical chemist with extensive background in instrumental analytical methods and with a special focus on chromatography coupled with advanced detection systems. This person will be responsible for the development and execution of analytical methods for the characterization and quantification of chemical compounds derived from the pro-cessing of renewable biomass. The particular challenge is the development of reliable protocols for analysis of monomeric and oligomeric biomolecules in the presence of highly complex biological matrices. 

The staff scientist is expected to contribute to research on the analytics of polysaccharide- and lignin-derived products and their degradation products occurring during the fractionation and downstream processing. It is also expected that a successful candidate will be engaged in student supervision and education on biomaterial science. 

Requirements

  • PhD in chemistry with a master’s or doctoral thesis in analytical chemistry
  • Preferably 3 years of postdoc and/or industrial experience in process-related analytics
  • Expertise in material science with a focus on sustainable materials
  • Experience in managing and supervising small research groups
  • Excellent written, oral, and communication skills
  • Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals 

Employment
Staff Scientist position can be either fixed-term or permanent. Salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University. The position is situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi, Espoo. The planned starting date is in January 2018, but can also be negotiated.
