Postdoctoral Research Fellow

University of Birmingham - Medical and Dental Sciences

Institute of Cancer & Genomic Sciences

Full Time, Fixed Term for 2 years

This is a post funded by PUMA Biotechnology for an exciting project that aims to investigate the effects of neratinib, an irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitor with hormone treatment in HER2 negative breast cancer cells which moderately expressing HER2. Neratinib has been approved by the FDA as an extended adjuvant treatment after trastuzumab in patients with HER2 positive breast cancers but it is not used in HER2 negative breast cancer patients. This project aims to investigate whether neratinib +/- hormone treatment will be effective in a small subset of HER2 negative breast cancer cells and to understand the factors that determine sensitivity and resistance to neratinib. This project will have direct clinical translational relevance and may help to plan for a clinical trial in the future in which neratinib +/- hormone treatment may be tested in breast cancer patients whose tumours are HER2 negative but moderately expressing HER2. As part of the post, the fellow is required to perform a whole range of biochemical methods as well as animal work.

Research and development is an important part of research posts at University of Birmingham. It is envisaged that this role will allow an excellent candidate to further develop expertise and interests in translational research as well as to give the candidate significant opportunities for personal development.

The ideal candidate should hold first degree in area of specialism at a minimum of 2:1 and normally, a PhD in a relevant biological field (although equivalent experience will be considered). The candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in a whole range of biochemical methods. Previous animal work will be desirable but not essential. The successful applicant is expected to undertake training to obtain personal license.
