The ECCLES project aims to reduce uncertainties in climate-carbon projections using Emergent Constraints. Emergent constraints are relationships between observable variations in the Earth System and future changes, which are evident across an ensemble of models. ECCLES will provide a general theoretical basis for these, and identify new constraints on the role of the land biosphere in the Earth System.

This post is one of a team of 3 postdoctoral researchers, 3 PhD students and a data analyst, who will be working with Professor Cox on aspects of ECCLES. In particular, this postdoctoral researcher will analyse observational data to infer changes in the land biosphere, and then use this data, plus outputs from Earth System Models (ESMs), to derive emergent constraints from the observed spatial variations. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, the successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in Earth System Modelling, with experience of analysing large datasets, and be able to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others, and act as team leader as required.

The successful candidate will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade E) or Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role. Candidates should demonstrate their achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.
