Research Associate in Autonomous Process Measurement Sensors

Salary: £36,800 – £44,220 (maximum salary on appointment will be £39,800 per annum)

This new post is part of a major new collaboration between the Chemical and Electrical & Electronic Engineering Departments of Imperial College with ABB, one of the world’s leading providers of automation and control solutions.

The post holder will establish the measurement scope offered by miniaturised multi-functional sensors systems for deployment in chemical process environments. They will develop and deploy micro-sensors to measure throughout all of the process environment using industrially relevant physical, chemical and electrical properties/information. Commercial and semi-commercial micro-sensors will be used to achieve this outcome. Their usage for measuring key process variables such as temperature, pressure, pH will be demonstrated at the bench scale and pilot scale.

Candidates should hold a first degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences and hold or be near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Experience in experimental measurement and/or sensors science relevant to process property measurements, especially in liquid phase environments, including data interpretation and analysis is essential. Proven ability to fault find and problem solve with electrical /instrumentation/sensor systems and the ability to use software such as Labview, Python, C# .NET is highly desirable.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040

The post is available immediately.  The appointment is for 3 years, with the possibility of extension.  The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).
