Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Understanding Extreme Weather Risk to Energy Infrastructure

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in understanding extreme weather risk to energy infrastructure to join the Energy and Environmental Informatics Research Group at the Oxford e-Research Centre, Department of Engineering Science. The post is funded by National Grid PLC and is fixed-term to 30 October 2018.

The project aims to improve the understanding of risk to the UKs Electrical System Infrastructure from Climate Change and extreme weather events. It will provide as output a map showing network equipment content and risk for each. You will be responsible for designing the experiments submitted to Weather@home and analyses to calculate extreme weather event risk per grid cell and then visualise these results.

You should possess a PhD in relevant subject with experience in the development and interpretation of the outputs from complex computer models, preferably general circulation models, good programming skills in high level languages, e.g. C++ and Fortran. The project is a three-way collaboration between OeRC, The Environmental Change Institute and National Grid so the there is a requirement for excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.
